Fågelarter i Storbritannien på väg att försvinna

januari 19, 2007

Farmland birds in the UK are under serious threat because the nation’s agricultural policy – designed in part to protect them – does not go far enough, a new study warns.

More than 60 native species will continue to decline in numbers, say researchers, who have devised a ”crystal ball” to predict what farmland biodiversity will look like in 20 years. But contrary to expectations, the new analysis predicts that genetically modified crops will not prove as damaging to bird populations as thought.

Although the UK perspective is not a pretty one, things look even worse elsewhere. ”The UK is further down the road than anyone else in protecting its farmland birds,” says Ken Norris at the University of Reading in the UK. ”That’s the good news. The scary thing is we’re not doing enough.”

Populations of farmland birds have almost halved since 1970, according to the country’s farmland bird index which the government uses as one of 15 indicators of its progress towards sustainable development.

[Undrar hur mycket trängselavgifter det krävs för att rädda dessa fåglar...hmm...vi får diskutera detta nästa år och komma fram med ett lämpligt lagförslag.]
